No registration? No problem.
Unlike most states, North Dakota doesn’t require voter registration. As long as you meet the eligibility requirements and have proof of residence, you are eligible to vote!
How can I vote? You’ve got options.
1. Vote on Election Day
If you like the excitement of voting in person, mark your calendar for November 5th! Just head to your polling place, check-in, and cast your vote. It’s that simple.
2. Vote by Absentee Ballot
If life is busy or you just prefer to vote from the comfort of your home, absentee voting is a great option. Here’s how it works:
Request a ballot by October 21st to ensure it’s mailed to you before November 4th.
Then, return it by November 4th in one of three easy ways:
- Drop it off in-person: You can personally hand it to your county auditor by 5:00 pm the day before Election Day.
→ Find Your County Auditor’s Office - Secure Drop Boxes: Some counties have drop boxes where you can safely leave your ballot—just drop it off by 5:00 pm the day before Election Day.
→ Check Drop Box Availability - Mail it back: Drop it in the mail and make sure it’s postmarked by November 4th.
3. Early Voting
Hate waiting in line? If early voting is offered in your area, this is a great way to skip the crowds and vote at your convenience before Election Day.
Where Do I Vote?
Polling places are assigned based on your residential address, and you can easily locate yours by using the online tool provided by the state of North Dakota.
Just enter your address to see where you’ll cast your vote on November 5th and view the hours of operation for your polling place.
What Should I Bring to the Polls?
When you arrive at your polling place, you’ll need to bring a valid ID to confirm your identity and ensure you’re eligible to vote.
A valid ID will need to include:
- Your name
- Current residential address
- Date of birth
Accepted forms of ID include:
- North Dakota driver’s license
- North Dakota non-driver’s ID card
- Tribal-government-issued ID
- Long-term care certificate (from a ND facility)
If your ID doesn’t include your current address or birthdate, you’ll need to bring an additional document, such as a utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, college ID, or another government-issued document that includes your name and current address.
Important note: Wearing political apparel like shirts, hats, or buttons supporting a candidate or ballot measure to the polls is not allowed. Make sure to save your branded campaign gear for after you’ve cast your vote!
